Right arm and hand swelling: what to know

A fall onto the wrist can cause a Distal Radius Fracture, with pain, swelling and difficulty gripping or moving the wrist. Rheumatoid Arthritis can inflame hand and wrist joints, often causing stiffness and swelling in more than one joint. Other possibilities include soft-tissue injury, infection, an allergic reaction or reduced drainage. The location, onset, warmth, skin appearance and whether the whole arm is involved help guide assessment.

Remove rings, watches and tight sleeves before swelling increases. Rest the arm from painful tasks, support it comfortably and elevate the hand when possible. After a recent injury, a wrapped cold pack used briefly may ease discomfort. Keep fingers gently moving if this does not increase pain, but avoid forceful gripping or massage until a fracture or infection has been considered.

Seek urgent care for sudden severe swelling, a visibly deformed wrist or arm, severe pain, inability to move the fingers, new numbness, weakness, or fingers that become pale, blue or cold. Prompt assessment is also needed for spreading redness, warmth, fever, or swelling after a sting or new medicine. Arm swelling with breathlessness or chest pain is an emergency.

Ask whether the wrist, joints or soft tissues appear affected, whether imaging or blood tests are needed, and how to protect movement while swelling and pain are being evaluated.
