Right adductor muscle strain: what to know

How the structures involved in Muscle Strain differ from normal

Short answer

A right adductor muscle strain is an injury to an inner-thigh muscle that can cause groin pain, tenderness and pain when the leg moves inward.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main area
Right inner thigh and groin
Typical triggers
Sprinting, kicking, sudden direction changes or stretching
Early aim
Reduce aggravating load while preserving comfortable movement

What it means

The adductors help stabilise the pelvis and bring the thigh toward the midline. A strain may happen during sprinting, kicking, changing direction or a sudden stretch. Symptoms can include a sharp or pulling feeling, bruising, weakness, muscle spasm or discomfort when walking, climbing stairs or squeezing the knees together. Mild soreness after unfamiliar exercise often settles with rest, while pain that began suddenly and limits movement deserves closer attention.

What you can do

For the first day or two, reduce activities that reproduce the pain and use a wrapped cold pack for short periods. Keep the leg moving gently within a comfortable range rather than forcing a stretch. As walking becomes easier, gradual strengthening can help restore control; a physiotherapist can tailor exercise to the injury and your sport. Do not return to fast running or cutting movements while ordinary walking, a gentle squeeze and light activity still cause pain.

When to seek care

Arrange an assessment if pain is severe, you cannot bear weight, bruising or swelling is extensive, the muscle looks unusually indented, or strength is markedly reduced. Seek urgent care for a cold or pale foot, new numbness, rapidly increasing swelling, fever, or pain after major trauma. Persistent inner-thigh pain can have causes other than a strain, so worsening or non-improving symptoms should be reviewed.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which adductor movements are safe now, whether an examination or imaging is needed, how to progress strengthening, and what functional tests should be painless before sport or work resumes.

Questions people ask

Can a right adductor strain cause groin pain?

Yes. The adductor muscles attach near the groin, so a strain can cause pain there as well as along the inner thigh.

Should you stretch a painful adductor?

Use only gentle, comfortable movement at first. Forceful stretching can aggravate healing tissue; progress should follow symptoms and an assessment when needed.
