Riester dermatoscope: what to know

The instrument uses focused illumination and magnification to reduce surface glare and reveal details that are difficult to see with the unaided eye. A clinician can assess the border, colour pattern, symmetry, and internal structures of a mole or other skin mark.

The device supports clinical judgement; it does not by itself name a diagnosis. Findings may be documented for comparison over time, or they may lead to closer examination, removal, or laboratory assessment. A dermatoscope may be used during a broader Skin Cancer Screening appointment.

The examination usually involves exposing the area, placing or holding the device over the skin, and comparing the mark with nearby skin. Tell the clinician about changes in size, shape, colour, bleeding, crusting, or persistent itching. Bring information about previous skin cancers and any photographs that show how the mark looked before.

The device does not replace a full skin history or examination. Follow-up may involve monitoring, another review, or a procedure if the appearance warrants it.

Arrange a timely skin review for a mark that is changing, repeatedly bleeding, crusting, becoming painful, or developing a new irregular colour pattern. Do not wait for a dermatoscope appointment if a wound is infected or you feel acutely unwell.

Ask what feature was seen through the device, whether the mark should be photographed or monitored, when it should be rechecked, and what change would require an earlier appointment.
