Rheumatoid arthritis: initial symptoms

RA commonly targets the lining of joints, producing inflammation that can make movement difficult. Early symptoms may involve the fingers, wrists, feet, or several joints, sometimes on both sides. Stiffness after waking or sitting still, difficulty closing the hand, and swelling that does not behave like a brief strain are worth recording. These features can also occur with infection, injury, osteoarthritis, or other illnesses, so a symptom list cannot replace examination.

Write down the first day of symptoms, affected joints, visible swelling, morning stiffness, fever or recent illness, and changes in work or sleep. Arrange a medical review when symptoms continue or keep returning. The clinician may examine the joints and select blood tests or imaging according to the findings. Protect painful joints from heavy repetitive tasks, use gentle movement within comfort, and ask before taking regular anti-inflammatory medication because it is not suitable for everyone.

Seek prompt advice for ongoing swelling, progressive stiffness, or a noticeable drop in grip, walking, or self-care ability. Get urgent help for a suddenly hot and severely painful joint, fever with swelling, major injury, new weakness or numbness, or breathing difficulty. Those warning signs require assessment on their own and should not be judged by how typical RA seems.

Ask which findings are most concerning, what other diagnoses are possible, and whether specialist assessment is needed. Clarify what activity is reasonable, which medicines may interact with your current treatment, and when to return if symptoms change.
