What should you know about RF subcision?

Short answer

RF subcision releases bands beneath selected depressed scars and uses radiofrequency energy to support skin remodelling.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What RF subcision means

A clinician passes a fine instrument under a scar to loosen fibrous attachments that pull the surface downward. The radiofrequency component delivers controlled heat in the treated tissue, which may encourage new collagen formation as the area heals. This approach is generally considered for rolling or tethered acne scars; it is not a universal treatment for every scar type.

Temporary swelling, bruising, tenderness, redness, or small entry marks can occur. Pigment changes, infection, uneven texture, and recurrence of tethering are possible concerns. Your skin tone, scar depth, active acne, and history of raised scars affect planning.

How to prepare and recover

Have the clinician assess whether the scars are tethered and whether active inflammation should be treated first. Share medicines, supplements, allergies, cold-sore history, bleeding problems, and any tendency toward abnormal scarring. Follow the clinic's instructions about cleansing, sun exposure, and products before the appointment.

After treatment, keep the sites clean and avoid picking, vigorous rubbing, and unapproved active skincare while the skin settles. Use the recommended sun protection, attend any planned review, and allow swelling to improve before judging the texture. Some people need a staged plan or another scar treatment for remaining depressions.

When to seek care

Contact the treating clinic promptly if pain, warmth, redness, or swelling is worsening rather than settling, or if drainage, fever, blisters, or spreading discoloration develops. Seek urgent medical help for severe pain, rapidly changing skin color, marked swelling near the eye, breathing difficulty, or signs of a serious allergic reaction.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which scars are suitable, what type of RF device and needle approach will be used, how many treatment stages may be considered, and which alternatives fit your skin. Clarify expected downtime, aftercare, warning signs, and how the clinician will review progress.

Questions people ask

Is RF subcision the same as ordinary subcision?

It uses the scar-release principle of subcision while adding radiofrequency energy; the exact technique depends on the device and clinician.

Can RF subcision treat active acne?

It is planned for established scars, so active acne and inflammation should be assessed before scar treatment.
