What should you know about reusable silicone scar sheets?

The sheet sits over the scar and helps hold moisture against the outer skin. This creates a protected surface while the scar matures and may ease tightness, itch, colour contrast, and thickness. They are most often considered for raised scars after surgery, injury, burns, or acne, rather than for an open wound or a scar that is still leaking.

Results depend on the scar’s age, height, location, and how the skin reacts. A silicone sheet does not remove scar tissue instantly and cannot change the original injury. A flat, pale scar may have little to gain from a sheet, while a firm or raised scar may be a more suitable discussion point.

Use the sheet only after the wound has closed and the skin is dry, unless your clinician gives different instructions. Cut it to cover the scar with a small border, place the adhesive side against clean skin, and follow the product guidance for wear time. Remove it gently, wash both the skin and sheet with mild soap and water, and let the sheet dry before reapplying.

Introduce wear gradually if the skin is sensitive. Stop and seek advice about persistent redness, blistering, a rash, or worsening itch. Do not share a sheet, place it over infected skin, or use it to seal drainage. Sun protection remains useful because a healing scar can darken with ultraviolet exposure.

Contact a clinician if the scar becomes increasingly painful, warm, swollen, or starts producing pus, blood, or new drainage. Arrange an assessment if it grows beyond the original wound, restricts movement, repeatedly breaks down, or changes quickly. These features can need treatment beyond home silicone care.

A clinician can check whether the skin is ready for silicone and whether another option, such as scar revision surgery, fits the scar’s location and behaviour.

Ask whether the scar is fully healed, how long to trial the sheet, how to manage irritation, and whether its height or tightness suggests another treatment. Take the product packaging to the appointment if you develop a reaction.
