What should you know about resistant strep throat?

A sore throat can have viral or other causes, and ongoing symptoms do not by themselves prove antibiotic resistance. A clinician may review the original test, dose, timing, missed doses, vomiting and contact with someone who is ill. Fever, swollen glands and throat pain can occur with strep throat and tonsillitis. Persistent one-sided pain, a muffled voice or difficulty opening the mouth can point to a complication that needs examination.

Complete antibiotics exactly as prescribed unless a clinician tells you to stop, and do not use leftover tablets or someone else’s medicine. Arrange a GP consultation if symptoms are not improving as expected, return after treatment or worsen. Drink fluids, rest and choose suitable pain relief after checking that it is safe for you. Avoid sharing cups and wash hands, particularly while unwell.

Seek urgent care for difficulty breathing or swallowing, drooling, dehydration, rapidly increasing neck swelling, severe one-sided throat pain, a muffled voice or inability to open your mouth normally. Emergency help is appropriate for breathing obstruction, collapse or severe confusion. A high fever with worsening illness also deserves prompt assessment.

Ask whether another test is needed, whether the illness could be viral or tonsillitis, how to take the prescribed antibiotic, and when you should expect improvement. Ask whether close contacts need advice and which symptoms indicate a throat complication.
