What should you know about tattoo removal?

A laser delivers brief pulses that fragment tattoo pigment while limiting heat exposure to surrounding skin. Several appointments are commonly spaced apart to allow the skin to recover and the body to clear fragmented pigment.

Tell the clinician about tanning, scars, keloids, skin conditions, medicines, and previous reactions. Follow instructions about sun protection and keeping the treated area clean. Temporary redness, swelling, tenderness, crusting, or colour change can occur. Do not pick scabs or apply unapproved products; allow the area to heal before judging the result.

Contact the clinic if pain, swelling, redness, drainage, or blistering is increasing rather than settling. Prompt review is also sensible for delayed healing or a new colour change that persists.
