What should you know about a repeat prescription template?

A repeat prescription is used when a medicine has already been prescribed for a continuing condition. The template can contain the medicine name, strength, directions and usual supply details. It does not replace a prescription decision: the prescriber checks whether the medicine remains suitable, whether the dose is unchanged and whether monitoring is due.

Some medicines need regular checks because symptoms, examination findings, blood tests or interactions can change the balance of benefit and harm. A request can therefore be delayed while the practice confirms information or arranges an appointment.

Request the refill before your current supply runs out, using the practice channel that accepts repeat requests. Include the medicine name, strength, directions and the amount remaining, and mention any missed doses, new medicines, side effects or changes in your health.

Do not alter the dose, share the medicine or stop a long-term treatment suddenly unless a clinician has advised you. Keep an up-to-date list of medicines and bring it to a GP Consultation when the practice asks for a review.

Seek prompt medical advice if the medicine is causing a severe or unexpected reaction, your symptoms are worsening, or you may run out before the request is processed. Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, collapse, severe confusion or chest pain.

Ask which checks are needed before the next refill, how long the repeat arrangement is expected to continue, what to do after a missed dose, and which symptoms should trigger an earlier review.
