Removable scaphoid fracture cast: what to know

The scaphoid is a small wrist bone that helps transfer force between the hand and forearm. A fracture may cause pain on the thumb side of the wrist, especially with gripping or pressing through the hand. Symptoms can be subtle, and an initial assessment may not show the full injury, so persistent wrist pain after a fall deserves review even if movement seems possible.

Whether a removable cast is suitable depends on fracture location, alignment, stability, and follow-up findings. It is not permission to test the wrist.

Keep the support on for the prescribed periods and refit it correctly after approved removal. Keep it dry, check the skin, and avoid gripping, pushing, pulling, or lifting with the affected hand unless specifically cleared. Elevate the hand for swelling and move free fingers gently if instructed. Do not return to sport or use the wrist to brace a fall. Fracture casting may be continued, changed, or replaced by fixation surgery depending on follow-up assessment.

Seek urgent help if the hand or fingers become cold, blue, unusually pale, numb, or hard to move. Contact the fracture team for increasing pain, swelling that does not settle with elevation, a damaged or rubbing cast, new tenderness, or pain that continues after the expected review. A missed or unstable scaphoid injury can need a different protection plan, so do not wait through worsening symptoms.

Ask when the cast may come off, whether repeat imaging is planned, and which hand activities are restricted.
