These products are topical cosmetics designed for visible, short-term tightening or smoothing. The effect can vary with the amount of puffiness, skin sensitivity, application technique, and the product formulation.

Under-eye bags may reflect fluid retention, normal ageing, inherited eyelid shape, reduced skin elasticity, allergies, or lack of sleep. A product may tighten the skin surface briefly, yet it cannot reposition eyelid fat, replace lost volume, or correct loose upper or lower eyelid skin.

Arrange medical assessment for new or persistent swelling that is mainly on one side, painful, warm, markedly red, or associated with discharge. Seek urgent care for swelling with vision changes, severe eye pain, difficulty moving the eye, fever, facial swelling, or trouble breathing.

A clinician should also review puffiness that follows an injury, develops suddenly, or comes with other symptoms such as widespread swelling or a new rash. Do not apply a cosmetic product over a suspected eye infection or inflamed skin.
