Understanding tonsillitis
Tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils, commonly during an infection. A Sore Throat, painful swallowing, Fever, swollen glands, bad breath, and an Earache can accompany it. Viral illness often improves with supportive care, while Strep Throat is a bacterial cause that may need testing and Antibiotic Treatment. Symptoms alone cannot reliably identify the cause, so avoid using leftover antibiotics or sharing someone else’s prescription.
Comfort measures
Rest, sip cool or warm fluids regularly, and choose soft foods that are easier to swallow. Gargling warm salty water may soothe the throat for adults and older children who can gargle safely; do not swallow it. Use paracetamol or another recommended pain reliever only if suitable for your age, health, and other medicines, following the label or pharmacist’s advice. Avoid smoke and other throat irritants. Wash hands, avoid sharing cups, and stay home while feverish or feeling acutely unwell. A GP Consultation can clarify whether an examination or throat test is needed.
When to seek care
Seek urgent care for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, a muffled voice, severe one-sided throat pain, difficulty opening the mouth, or rapidly increasing neck swelling. Arrange medical review for persistent fever, dehydration, recurrent episodes, a rash, or symptoms that are worsening rather than settling. A child who is unusually sleepy or drinking very little needs prompt assessment.
