Remedies for laryngitis

Short answer
Most laryngitis improves with voice rest, regular fluids, humidified air and avoiding smoke, while persistent or severe symptoms need assessment.

What laryngitis means
Laryngitis is inflammation around the voice box. It can make the voice hoarse, weak or absent and may come with a dry cough, throat irritation or a sore throat. A common cold can trigger it, while acid reflux, smoke, heavy voice use and other irritants may also inflame the area. Hoarse voice is a typical presentation of laryngitis, but hoarseness can have several causes.
What you can do
Use your voice gently and avoid whispering, shouting and singing while symptoms are active; whispering can also strain the voice. Sip water regularly, choose soothing warm or cool drinks, and use a humidifier if indoor air feels dry. Avoid smoking, second-hand smoke and dusty environments. Do not repeatedly clear your throat; swallow or sip water instead. If reflux seems to trigger symptoms, discuss practical measures with a clinician rather than starting medicines without advice.
When to seek care
Arrange a GP Consultation if hoarseness does not settle, keeps returning, or interferes with work or eating. Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, noisy breathing, inability to swallow fluids, drooling, marked neck swelling or rapidly worsening symptoms. A clinician may examine your throat and voice box and look for infection, reflux or another cause.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what may be irritating your voice, whether reflux or infection is involved, how long voice rest should continue, and whether a medicine or specialist assessment is appropriate.

Questions people ask
Should I whisper when I have laryngitis?
No. Speak softly when needed, because whispering can still strain the voice.
Can laryngitis be caused by reflux?
Yes. Acid reaching the throat can irritate the voice box, so recurring hoarseness deserves assessment.
