How to Relieve Shin Splints

How the structures involved in Shin Splints differ from normal

Short answer

To relieve shin splints, reduce impact, use comfortable cross-training, and return to running gradually after symptoms settle.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Pause
Running and jumping until walking is comfortable
Build back
Increase impact gradually after symptoms settle
Seek review
For focal, rest, night, or weight-bearing pain

What shin splints mean

Shin splints, also called medial tibial stress syndrome, are exercise-related pain along the inner edge or front of the shin. They often appear after adding distance, speed, hills, jumping, or harder surfaces faster than the legs can adapt. Foot mechanics, including flat feet, calf weakness, and changes in running technique, may add to the load. Shin splints cause diffuse tenderness rather than a single sharply localised spot, but a stress fracture can feel similar and needs assessment.

How to settle symptoms

Reduce or pause running and jumping until normal walking is comfortable. Use cycling, swimming, or another low-impact option only when it does not reproduce pain. Gentle calf and ankle mobility may be useful, followed by progressive strengthening for the calf, foot, hip, and trunk. Check that your shoes are comfortable and replace footwear that has lost support. Physiotherapy can assess movement and load management; gait retraining may help address technique, while custom orthotics may be considered when foot mechanics contribute.

When to seek care

Arrange a review if pain is focal, occurs at rest or at night, causes swelling, worsens with ordinary walking, or returns each time you resume impact. Seek prompt assessment if you cannot bear weight or if pain followed a direct injury. Sudden severe lower-leg pain with numbness, weakness, a tense swelling, or a cool foot requires urgent care.

Questions for your doctor

Does this fit shin splints, or should a bone stress injury be ruled out? Which training changes should I make? Would physiotherapy, gait retraining, or foot support help my movement pattern?

Questions people ask

Are shin splints caused only by running?

No. Jumping, dancing, field sports, hills, and other repeated-impact activities can also overload the shin.

Can footwear affect shin splints?

Footwear can change how impact is distributed, so comfort, fit, and support are worth reviewing when symptoms recur.
