How to reduce heartburn

Short answer
To reduce heartburn, eat smaller meals, avoid lying down soon after eating, identify triggers, and use recommended treatment when appropriate.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Meal habit
- Smaller meals, eaten slowly
- After eating
- Stay upright and avoid late meals
What causes the burning feeling
Heartburn is a burning sensation behind the breastbone caused when stomach contents move upwards and irritate the food pipe. Acid Reflux commonly presents with heartburn, while Gastritis, Peptic Ulcer, or Hiatus Hernia may also cause upper abdominal or chest discomfort. Symptoms can be more noticeable after a large meal, when bending, or when lying down. Heartburn is not the same as every type of chest pain.
Reducing episodes
Choose smaller meals and eat slowly. Notice whether spicy or fatty foods, coffee, chocolate, alcohol, or late meals trigger symptoms, then reduce only the triggers that affect you. Stay upright after eating and raise the upper body during sleep if night symptoms occur. Avoid tight clothing around the abdomen and ask a pharmacist about an antacid or Acid Reflux Medication. Follow product directions and review regular medicines with a clinician, since some can irritate the stomach or relax the valve above it.
When symptoms need attention
Call emergency services for chest pressure or pain with breathlessness, sweating, faintness, nausea, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw, or back. Arrange prompt medical review for difficulty swallowing, food sticking, vomiting blood, black stools, repeated vomiting, unexplained weight loss, or heartburn that keeps returning despite sensible changes. A clinician can assess whether testing or a longer treatment plan is needed.
Questions for your doctor
Could my symptoms be reflux or another condition? Which treatment is suitable with my other medicines? How long should I try it before review?
