Short answer

To reduce hand swelling in pregnancy, keep your hands elevated, move your fingers gently, stay comfortably hydrated, and remove tight rings.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Simple measure
Remove tight rings before fingers become more swollen
Movement
Gentle finger and wrist movement can reduce stiffness
Urgent concern
Sudden swelling with headache or visual changes needs prompt advice

What pregnancy-related swelling means

Pregnancy can cause extra fluid in the tissues, and swelling may be more noticeable in the hands later in the day or after heat and activity. It may affect both hands and feel tight rather than painful. Swelling that is sudden, marked, or accompanied by a severe headache, visual changes, pain below the ribs, or feeling very unwell needs prompt contact with your maternity team because it can be a sign of a pregnancy complication.

One swollen hand can have a local cause. Pain, warmth, redness, injury, or difficulty moving the wrist or fingers may need assessment for problems such as a distal radius fracture or inflammation. Pregnancy does not make every new hand symptom routine.

Ways to ease the swelling

Rest with your hands supported above heart level when practical. Open and close your fingers slowly, circle your wrists gently, and change position regularly. Avoid rings, watches, cuffs, or gloves that leave marks; swelling can make jewellery difficult to remove. Keep your hands cool, avoid prolonged heat, and use a wrapped cool pack briefly if it feels soothing. Do not apply it directly to the skin.

Drink regularly rather than restricting fluids, and follow the activity and salt advice given by your maternity clinician. Do not start diuretics, herbal products, compression gloves, or pain medicines for swelling without checking that they are suitable during pregnancy. A hand swelling symptom guide can help you describe the pattern at an appointment.

When to seek care

Contact your maternity team promptly if swelling appears suddenly, rapidly increases, or affects your face as well as your hands. Seek urgent advice for severe or persistent headache, blurred vision or flashing lights, upper abdominal pain, shortness of breath, chest pain, or feeling faint. Arrange assessment for one-sided swelling with redness, warmth, significant pain, numbness, weakness, or an injury. These patterns should not be explained away as normal pregnancy swelling.

Questions for your maternity clinician

Ask: Is the amount and timing of my swelling expected for this stage of pregnancy? Should my blood pressure or urine be checked? Are compression gloves or any medicine appropriate for me? Which symptoms mean I should call immediately? Could my one-sided pain or stiffness reflect a wrist injury or an inflammatory condition such as rheumatoid arthritis?

Questions people ask

Is hand swelling common during pregnancy?

Mild swelling can occur because pregnancy changes fluid balance, especially later in the day. Sudden or rapidly increasing swelling should be reported to your maternity team.

Should you limit water to reduce swollen hands?

Do not restrict fluids unless your clinician specifically advises it. Drink regularly and ask your maternity team about swelling that persists or changes.
