What should you know about red tinea versicolor?

Tinea versicolor develops when a yeast that normally lives on skin grows more than usual. The resulting patches may look red, pink, tan, brown, or lighter than nearby skin, depending on your natural skin tone and recent sun exposure. They commonly appear on the chest, back, shoulders, neck, or upper arms and may join into larger areas. Fine scale can be easier to see when the skin is gently scratched, and mild itch may occur, especially with heat or sweating. It is not the same as a bacterial infection and is not usually spread by ordinary contact.

Colour can remain uneven after the yeast is controlled because the skin needs time to restore its normal pigment response. A rash, dark patch, white patch, or scale may have other causes, so examination is useful when the appearance is atypical or the diagnosis is uncertain.
