Red swollen face causes: what to know

A change after skincare, hair products, shaving, or sun exposure points toward irritation or contact allergy. Repeated episodes after heat, exercise, spicy food, or emotional stress can be flushing. Skin that is hot, painful, increasingly tender, or accompanied by fever may need assessment for infection. Rosacea can present with recurring central facial redness and visible sensitivity. Call emergency services if facial swelling comes with breathing difficulty, throat or tongue swelling, collapse, or rapidly spreading symptoms. Seek urgent care for fever with a hot painful face, severe pain, eye involvement, visual change, or swelling near the eye. Make a routine appointment when redness lasts, repeatedly returns, leaves scaling or bumps, or has no clear trigger.
