Red sticky eye: what you should know

A red sticky eye is often caused by conjunctivitis or irritation, but pain, vision change, or light sensitivity needs prompt assessment. The type and amount of discharge, one-eye or two-eye involvement, and recent contact exposure help guide the next step.

Conjunctivitis can cause redness, watering, gritty discomfort, and sticky discharge that makes the lashes cling together. Allergic conjunctivitis more often affects both eyes with prominent itching and watery discharge, often alongside sneezing. A foreign body, dry eye, smoke, or cosmetic product can irritate the surface. A red eye with significant pain or reduced vision is different from simple surface irritation and should not be managed only with home care.

Wash hands before and after touching the eye. Gently loosen crusts with clean cotton or a fresh clean cloth moistened with water, using a new section for each wipe. Do not share towels, pillows, cosmetics, or eye drops, and pause contact lenses until the eye is comfortable and a clinician says they are suitable again. Avoid rubbing and avoid using someone else’s prescription drops.

Seek urgent care for severe eye pain, new blurred or reduced vision, strong light sensitivity, marked swelling, injury, chemical exposure, or a red eye in a contact-lens wearer. Get prompt review if discharge is heavy, symptoms are worsening, or the eyelids are difficult to open. A baby with a red sticky eye should be assessed promptly, especially if unwell or feverish.

Ask whether the discharge suggests infection or allergy, whether you should stop lenses or cosmetics, how long to keep precautions for others, and which eye symptoms should bring you back urgently.
