Red spot on face from sun: what to know

Sunlight can widen small blood vessels and irritate the outer skin, causing warmth, redness, tightness, or sensitivity. A single area may also be an inflamed blemish, a reaction to a product, or a flare of rosacea. Redness that fades as the skin cools is different from a spot that remains, becomes rough, crusted, or bleeds. The appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

Move out of direct sun, cool the area with a clean damp cloth, and use a bland moisturiser if it does not sting. Pause scrubs, peels, fragranced products, and active ingredients until the skin settles. Use shade, protective clothing, and broad-spectrum sunscreen on intact skin. Do not pick, scratch, or apply steroid or bleaching products without guidance. Photograph the area in consistent light so you can notice change.

Arrange a dermatology review if the spot does not settle, repeatedly returns in the same place, feels rough, forms a sore, or changes in outline or colour. Seek prompt care for rapidly increasing pain, swelling around the eye, blistering over a large area, fever, or redness that is spreading quickly. A clinician can examine the lesion and decide whether testing or treatment is appropriate.
