Red rash with blisters: what should you know?

Blisters are fluid-filled areas where the upper skin layers separate. Friction, burns, or Contact Dermatitis can produce blisters at an exposed site. Atopic Dermatitis may become blistered when severely inflamed. A new medicine can cause a Drug Rash, and a widespread or rapidly changing eruption deserves prompt review. Heat Rash can cause small bumps in sweaty areas, but larger, painful, or spreading blisters should not be self-diagnosed. The location, timing, pain, itch, and other symptoms help guide evaluation.

Do not intentionally pop the blisters or peel the overlying skin. Wash gently, pat dry, and cover loosely with a clean non-stick dressing if clothing rubs. Avoid new creams, fragranced products, heat, and friction. Wash your hands after touching the area and do not share towels. A clinician may need to inspect the rash and review recent medicines, exposures, or illness before recommending treatment.

Seek urgent medical help for blisters with breathing difficulty, facial swelling, faintness, eye involvement, mouth sores, genital sores, fever, or marked weakness. Get prompt assessment if the rash is rapidly spreading, very painful, tender to touch, infected-looking, or started soon after a new medicine. Arrange care for unexplained blistering, even when the area is small, because broken skin can become infected.

Ask whether the pattern suggests Contact Dermatitis, a Drug Rash, or another cause; whether any medicine should be paused; how to dress the area; and which changes require emergency attention.
