Red rash on scalp: what it may mean and what to do

Look for scale, flakes, bumps, crusting, oozing, tenderness, or areas where hair is breaking. A rash that follows a new shampoo, dye, oil, or styling product can fit Contact Dermatitis. Thick, well-defined scaly patches can fit Psoriasis, while an expanding ring-like patch or broken hairs may suggest Ringworm. Itching can occur with Atopic Dermatitis or Scabies, but a rash does not need to itch to deserve attention. A clinician may examine the scalp closely and review products, medicines, recent illness, and contact with affected people.

Pause newly introduced scalp products and avoid scratching, picking, tight headwear, and harsh heat. Wash gently with lukewarm water, keep combs and towels personal, and avoid applying steroid or antifungal products without advice when the diagnosis is uncertain. Photograph the area in good light and note when it began, whether it is spreading, and any product or medicine change. Arrange a dermatology assessment if it persists, recurs, or causes hair loss.

Seek urgent medical help for a rapidly spreading rash with facial swelling, breathing difficulty, faintness, blistering, skin peeling, severe pain, or sores involving the eyes or mouth. Prompt assessment is also sensible for fever, pus, marked tenderness, swollen glands, or a painful scalp rash with new hair loss. These features can signal a reaction or infection that needs targeted treatment.

Ask whether the appearance suggests Contact Dermatitis, Psoriasis, Ringworm, or another condition; whether a sample or other test is needed; which products and treatments to stop; and how to protect the scalp while it heals.
