Red rash on the neck: what to know

The neck is exposed to perfume, hair products, jewellery, collars, sweat, and sunlight. A rash matching a contact area may follow irritation or allergy. Itchy, dry patches can occur with atopic dermatitis, while a moist fold can develop intertrigo. A ring-shaped scaly patch may be ringworm, and a widespread rash after a new medicine needs prompt consideration of drug eruption. Redness that is hot, tender, swollen, or rapidly expanding may signal infection rather than simple irritation.

Stop newly introduced fragrance, haircare, jewellery, and skincare products, and wash the neck with lukewarm water and a mild cleanser. Pat dry, apply a plain moisturiser, and choose loose breathable clothing. Avoid scratching, exfoliating, shaving over broken skin, or using multiple medicated products at once. Keep a note of when the rash appeared and photograph its shape. A clinician can match treatment to the surface findings instead of guessing from redness alone.

Call for urgent help if neck swelling affects breathing or swallowing, or if there is facial swelling, faintness, widespread blistering, skin peeling, or a rash with fever and severe illness. Seek prompt assessment for rapidly spreading redness, marked warmth, pain, pus, red streaks, or swelling after a new medicine. Book a review if the rash persists, returns with a particular product, or leaves cracking or darkening.

Ask whether the distribution fits contact dermatitis, eczema, intertrigo, ringworm, or a drug reaction; which products should be avoided; and what treatment is safe near the face and neck.
