Red rash on the chest: what to check

Sweat under clothing or along the breastbone can cause prickly Heat Rash, especially in warm conditions. A rash beneath the breasts may be Intertrigo, where moisture and rubbing inflame the fold. New perfume, sunscreen, laundry products, or fabric can cause Contact Dermatitis on exposed skin. Atopic Dermatitis may be dry and itchy; Psoriasis may be thicker and scaly. Ringworm can form an expanding ring, while a Drug Rash may appear after a medicine and extend beyond the chest.

Rinse away suspected products, use a gentle fragrance-free cleanser, and pat dry rather than rubbing. Wear breathable clothing and change after sweating. Keep skin folds dry and avoid tight straps or rough seams over the rash. Do not scratch or apply strong antiseptics. If the skin is broken, oozing, or very tender, have it examined before applying active creams; the wrong product can delay recognition of infection.

Seek emergency help for chest rash with breathing trouble, facial swelling, faintness, or mouth and eye involvement. Arrange urgent care for fever, rapidly worsening redness, severe pain, blisters, peeling, pus, or red streaks. Book a clinical review if it persists, recurs in the same place, spreads, or began soon after a new medication.

Ask whether the rash fits Heat Rash, Intertrigo, Contact Dermatitis, or a fungal condition; whether a product should be avoided; and which symptoms would mean the treatment needs review.
