What should you know about red light photodynamic therapy?

Short answer

Red light photodynamic therapy uses a light-sensitive medicine and controlled red light to target selected abnormal or sun-damaged skin, with temporary sensitivity afterward.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Treatment type
Medicine activated by controlled red light
Common recovery effects
Redness, stinging, swelling, crusting, or peeling
Key precaution
Follow the clinic’s light-avoidance instructions

How the treatment works

A clinician applies a photosensitising medicine to the treatment area and allows it to absorb. Red light then activates the medicine, producing a reaction that can damage selected diseased or damaged cells. The exact protocol depends on the diagnosis, skin site, medicine, and light source. This treatment is different from a home red-light mask because photodynamic therapy includes a prescribed topical medicine.

For some people with suitable superficial lesions, photodynamic therapy may be discussed as an option for basal cell carcinoma or other sun-related changes. It is not appropriate for every lesion, and a clinician may need to examine or sample the area before choosing treatment.

Preparing for and recovering from treatment

Tell the treating clinician about medicines that increase light sensitivity, immune conditions, pregnancy, allergies, and previous reactions to light treatments. Follow instructions about washing, shaving, creams, and avoiding bright light before and after the session. During recovery, protect the area from direct sunlight and strong indoor light for the period advised by your clinic.

Redness, warmth, stinging, swelling, crusting, or peeling can occur as the treated skin heals. Use only the cleanser, moisturiser, dressing, or pain relief recommended for your skin. Do not pick crusts or add exfoliating products while the surface is tender. A clinician may discuss other approaches, including topical 5-fluorouracil, when they fit the diagnosis.

When to contact a clinician

Contact your clinic promptly if pain is increasing rather than settling, swelling is spreading, drainage develops, or the area becomes increasingly hot and tender. Seek urgent help for facial swelling affecting breathing, widespread blistering, faintness, or a severe reaction after treatment. A lesion that bleeds repeatedly, changes, or does not heal needs assessment rather than repeated self-treatment.

Questions to take with you

What diagnosis is being treated, and why is photodynamic therapy suitable for this site? Which medicine and light protocol will you use? How long must I avoid bright light? Which symptoms are expected, and who should I call if they worsen? What alternatives should we compare?

Questions people ask

Is red light photodynamic therapy the same as a red-light mask?

No. Photodynamic therapy activates a prescribed light-sensitive medicine; a red-light mask does not use that medicine.

Can every skin lesion be treated this way?

No. The diagnosis, depth, location, and appearance of a lesion determine whether this approach is suitable.
