Red itchy rash on forearm: what it may mean

A rash limited to one forearm may follow contact with a new soap, plant, metal, adhesive, or product. Dry, rough, recurring patches can occur with Atopic Dermatitis or Psoriasis. A ring-shaped, gradually enlarging patch can suggest Ringworm, while marked itch at night or similar symptoms in close contacts can point toward Scabies. A new medicine can also cause a Drug Rash, sometimes beyond the original area.

Notice whether the skin is raised, blistered, scaly, warm, painful, oozing, or spreading. The timing of the rash after an exposure, illness, or medicine helps a clinician narrow the possibilities; the symptom alone does not identify one condition.

Wash gently with lukewarm water, stop newly introduced products on the area, and avoid scratching. Apply a plain, fragrance-free moisturiser while the skin is slightly damp. Keep nails short and use a cool, clean cloth for brief periods when itching flares. Do not share towels or apply a steroid-antifungal combination without advice, because the wrong product can obscure an infection or irritate broken skin.

Arrange medical assessment if the rash is spreading, keeps returning, becomes painful or hot, develops pus or thick crusting, or does not settle with gentle care. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, faintness, rapidly blistering skin, or a rash involving the eyes or mouth. Fever with a rapidly worsening rash also needs prompt assessment.

Ask whether the pattern fits Atopic Dermatitis, Contact Dermatitis, Drug Rash, Heat Rash, Ringworm, or another cause; whether testing is needed; which products to pause; and how to protect the skin while it heals.
