What should you know about red in eye white?

The surface vessels may widen after dryness, dust, smoke, rubbing, contact lens problems, or a minor surface irritation. Conjunctivitis can cause redness with discharge or sticky lashes, while allergic conjunctivitis more often brings itching and watering in both eyes. A sharply defined bright-red patch can follow a small broken surface vessel. Redness alone cannot show which cause is present, so the pattern, discomfort, discharge, light sensitivity, and vision are useful clues.

Do not rub the eye. Wash your hands, pause contact lens use, and rinse away an obvious irritant with clean water or sterile saline. A cool clean compress may ease irritation or itch. Avoid sharing towels, pillows, eye makeup, or drops, particularly when discharge suggests infection. Do not use leftover prescription drops; the wrong medicine can hide important signs or worsen some problems. If redness does not begin to settle or keeps returning, arrange an eye or medical review.

Seek urgent assessment for moderate or severe eye pain, reduced or blurred vision, marked light sensitivity, a foreign body that will not wash out, chemical exposure, injury, or redness around a contact lens. Emergency help is appropriate when sudden vision loss, severe headache, nausea, or an unequal pupil accompanies the red eye. A newborn, a person with recent eye surgery, or someone with a weakened immune system should obtain prompt advice.

Ask whether the redness is on the surface or deeper, whether discharge needs treatment, when contact lenses can be restarted, and what change in vision or pain should trigger urgent review.
