Short answer

Red hives are raised, itchy welts caused by temporary skin inflammation; sudden swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat needs emergency help.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical feature
Raised itchy welts that can change shape or move to another area.
Emergency sign
Breathing difficulty or swelling of the tongue, mouth, or throat.

How hives behave

Hives, or urticaria, are usually raised patches or rings that may be pink, red, or close to your natural skin tone. They can itch, burn, or feel warm. Individual welts often change shape, fade, and appear elsewhere while the episode continues. Triggers can include an infection, medicine, food, heat, pressure, exercise, or emotional stress, although no single trigger is found in many episodes.

Deeper swelling can affect the lips, eyelids, hands, feet, or throat and is called Angioedema. Hives are different from a fixed Skin Rash that stays in one place and becomes scaly or bruised. Photographing the welts before they fade can help a clinician assess the pattern.

Relieving an episode

Keep the skin cool, wear loose clothing, and avoid hot showers, rubbing, and known triggers. Use a cool compress and try not to scratch. A pharmacist or clinician may recommend Antihistamine Treatment after considering your age, medicines, pregnancy status, and health conditions. Oral Corticosteroid Treatment is sometimes considered for selected severe episodes, but it should be prescribed rather than self-started.

When to seek urgent care

Call emergency services immediately for trouble breathing, wheezing, throat tightness, difficulty swallowing, faintness, or rapidly increasing swelling of the tongue or mouth. Seek medical advice for hives that keep returning, last beyond a short episode, bruise, become painful, or occur with fever or joint symptoms. Skin Swelling or Itchy Skin without breathing symptoms still deserves review when severe or recurrent.

Questions for your doctor

Could this be Hives or another Skin Rash? What medicines, foods, infections, or physical triggers should I track? What should I do if swelling reaches my mouth? Which antihistamine is appropriate for me?
