What should you know about red heat rash?

Short answer
Red heat rash is an irritated, sweat-related eruption that often improves when the skin is cooled, kept dry, and protected from friction.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical trigger
- Heat, sweating, dampness, tight clothing, or friction.
- Helpful first step
- Cool and dry the skin, then reduce rubbing and occlusive products.
How heat rash behaves
Heat rash, also called prickly heat, can cause clusters of tiny red bumps, an itchy or prickling sensation, and irritation in sweaty or covered areas. It commonly follows hot weather, exercise, fever, tight clothing, or prolonged dampness. The neck, chest, back, skin folds, and areas under clothing can be affected. The rash may feel rough and may sting more when you sweat.
Redness and bumps can have other explanations, including contact irritation, infection, or eczema. Consider what preceded the rash, whether it is confined to a warm area, and whether it is improving after cooling. A rash that keeps spreading or changes character should be reviewed rather than assumed to be heat rash.
Cooling and skin care
Move to a cooler environment, take a lukewarm shower, pat the skin dry, and wear loose breathable clothing. Keep folds dry and avoid heavy oils, fragranced products, and thick occlusive creams while the skin feels blocked or prickly. Do not scratch the bumps. Once the skin is no longer hot or damp, a clinician may recommend Emollient Therapy for dryness; Topical Corticosteroids should be used only with suitable medical guidance.
When to seek care
Seek medical advice if the rash does not start settling after cooling, returns often, becomes painful, forms blisters or pus, or is accompanied by fever. Get urgent help for confusion, fainting, breathing difficulty, or severe illness in a hot environment. A clinician can distinguish heat rash from other Skin Rash, Skin Redness, or Skin Bumps causes.
