What should you know about red fever?

Short answer
Red fever means a raised body temperature, often caused by an infection, and it should be assessed alongside other symptoms.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What a fever can mean
Fever is the body’s response to an immune trigger. Viral illnesses such as a common cold, COVID-19, bronchiolitis, croup, or acute bronchitis can cause it. Bacterial infections, including cellulitis or brucellosis, are other possible causes. Chickenpox may also produce fever with an itchy rash. The temperature alone cannot identify the cause; age, medical history, how suddenly it began, and symptoms such as cough, breathing trouble, pain, rash, vomiting, or urinary symptoms all matter.
What to do at home
Rest, drink fluids regularly, and wear light clothing in a comfortable room. Check how you feel rather than trying to force the temperature down with cold baths or heavy blankets. If you use a fever medicine, follow the product directions and check that it is suitable for the person’s age, pregnancy status, and medical conditions. Do not give children aspirin unless a clinician specifically advises it. Keep a note of when the fever began and any new symptoms.
When to seek care
Get urgent medical help for difficulty breathing, confusion, a seizure, severe weakness, a stiff neck, a purple or rapidly spreading rash, repeated vomiting, or signs of dehydration such as very little urine. Seek prompt advice for a baby with fever, an older adult who becomes unusually drowsy, or anyone with a weakened immune system. Arrange a medical review when fever persists, returns after improving, or occurs with a focused symptom such as chest pain or severe abdominal pain.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what cause is most consistent with the full symptom pattern, whether testing is needed, which fever medicine is appropriate, and what change should prompt reassessment.

Is fever itself an illness?
Usually, fever is a sign of an underlying immune response rather than a diagnosis by itself.
