Red eyes with mucus: what to know

A small amount of stringy or sticky mucus can build up when the eye surface is dry or irritated. More persistent crusting and redness can occur with Conjunctivitis. Clear, stretchy mucus with prominent itching can occur with Allergic Conjunctivitis. Smoke, dust, cosmetics, and contact lenses may worsen irritation. These patterns overlap, so mucus cannot by itself establish the cause or tell you whether medicine is needed.

Clean your hands, then soften mucus with a clean damp compress before wiping gently. Use fresh cotton for each eye and do not scrape the eyelids. Pause contact lenses and eye makeup while symptoms continue. Wash towels and pillowcases, avoid touching the eyes, and do not share personal items. Preservative-free lubricating drops may help some irritation, but a pharmacist or clinician should guide product choice, especially for children or contact-lens users.

Seek prompt care for eye pain, light sensitivity, blurred vision, severe swelling, injury, or a red eye in someone who wears contact lenses. Urgent assessment is needed for sudden vision loss or severe pain. Arrange a review when mucus keeps returning, redness spreads, or symptoms are worsening.

Ask whether the mucus is more suggestive of allergy, infection, or dryness; whether you need an examination; and when you can safely restart lenses or cosmetics.
