Redness around the iris: what to know

The iris is the coloured ring around the pupil. Redness on the white of the eye is often caused by surface vessels becoming more visible, dryness, allergy, rubbing, or conjunctivitis. Redness concentrated close to the iris can be more concerning when it comes with deep ache, light sensitivity, blurred sight, a hazy cornea, or an unusual pupil. Looking at the eye cannot reliably distinguish these causes, so the pattern and accompanying symptoms matter more than colour alone.

Do not rub the eye, press on it, or try to remove anything with tweezers. Remove contact lenses and avoid eye makeup. Rest away from smoke, dust, and bright glare; sunglasses may make light more comfortable outdoors. A clean cool compress can soothe surface irritation. Do not use another person’s medication or old prescription drops, because the wrong product can mask symptoms or worsen some causes.

Arrange prompt eye assessment if redness sits close to the iris, particularly with pain or light sensitivity. Seek urgent care for reduced vision, a changed pupil shape or size, severe headache with nausea, significant swelling, injury, or a chemical splash. A contact-lens wearer with a painful red eye should be seen promptly even if the redness seems limited.

Ask whether the redness is limited to the surface or involves deeper structures. Tell the clinician when it started, whether the coloured part looks different, what the pain feels like, whether light hurts, and whether you have used lenses, drops, or eye products.
