Red eyelids: common causes and next steps

Itching and watering fit an allergic pattern, while burning may follow smoke, cosmetics, or another irritant. Crusting at the lashes can occur with eyelid inflammation. Tenderness, warmth, swelling, or discharge may point toward infection. Redness limited to the skin differs from redness on the eye surface; both can occur together. A photo and a note of recent products, contact lens use, and symptom timing can help during an appointment.

Pause new eye creams, makeup, and fragranced cleansers until the skin settles. Rinse away a suspected irritant with clean lukewarm water and use a cool compress for comfort. Avoid rubbing, scratching, and sharing face towels. Contact lens wearers should remove lenses and avoid wearing them while the eye is irritated. Do not use steroid or antibiotic eye products unless prescribed for this episode.

Seek urgent care for eye pain, light sensitivity, reduced or blurred vision, injury, chemical exposure, or rapidly increasing swelling. Prompt assessment is also needed when the eye is difficult to open, redness spreads around the eye, or there is fever or pus-like discharge. Arrange a routine review when symptoms keep returning or do not improve after avoiding the suspected trigger.
