Red eyelid in a newborn: what to know

Redness can follow rubbing, contact with dried tears, or mild skin irritation around the lid. A blocked tear duct may cause watering and sticky material near the inner corner. Conjunctivitis can cause a red or swollen lid with discharge, and a newborn should be assessed promptly if infection is suspected. The redness may be on the skin of the lid, the white of the eye, or both; noting this helps a clinician.

Wash your hands before touching the baby's face. Gently wipe discharge with clean cotton or gauze moistened with cooled boiled water, using a fresh piece for each wipe and moving from the inner corner outward. Do not share towels, use leftover eye drops, put breast milk in the eye, or press on a swollen lid. Keep smoke, dust, and fragranced products away from the baby's face. Contact the baby's clinician for advice rather than waiting if redness persists or discharge returns.

Arrange urgent medical assessment if the eyelid is markedly swollen, the eye cannot open, the baby seems unwell, feeds poorly, has a fever, or the eye looks cloudy. Seek immediate help for rapidly spreading redness, a bulging eye, or concern about vision. A newborn with significant discharge or redness should be reviewed promptly, even when the baby otherwise seems settled.
