Viral Red Eye: What You Should Know
Updated

Short answer
A virus can inflame the eye surface, causing redness, watering, irritation, and sometimes a gritty sensation.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How viral red eye presents
Viral conjunctivitis may begin in one eye and later affect the other. The eye can be watery and uncomfortable, with redness across the white surface. A cold or sore throat may occur at the same time, and the eyelids may feel puffy. Clear or lightly mucoid watering is more typical than thick pus, but symptoms can overlap with bacterial infection, allergy, or irritation. The condition itself, rather than the redness alone, is what determines whether viral infection is likely.
Reduce irritation and spread
Wash hands with soap and water, especially after touching the face, and avoid rubbing the eyes. Do not share towels, pillowcases, cosmetics, or eye drops. Clean discharge with a clean damp pad and wash reusable cloths before sharing them. Stay home from close-contact activities if discharge is heavy or you cannot avoid touching the eye. Cool compresses and suitable lubricating drops may ease discomfort; ask a pharmacist about drops if you have other eye conditions or use contact lenses.
When to seek care
Seek urgent assessment for vision loss or change, significant pain, marked light sensitivity, a swollen eye, pain with eye movement, or symptoms after trauma or chemical exposure. Contact a clinician if symptoms are severe, worsening, or not settling, or if you are immunocompromised. Contact lens wearers should obtain prompt advice because infections affecting the cornea can become serious.
Questions for your doctor
Does the pattern fit viral conjunctivitis? How long should I avoid contact lenses? What cleaning routine protects people at home? Which symptoms would suggest corneal involvement?

Questions people ask
Do antibiotics treat viral red eye?
No. Antibiotics do not act on viruses, so a clinician should decide whether another cause needs treatment.
Can viral red eye spread to the other eye?
Yes. Touching the affected eye and then the other eye can transfer infection, so hand hygiene matters.
