What should you know about red eye sore throat?

A Common Cold or COVID-19 can cause throat irritation alongside watery or irritated eyes. Influenza may bring stronger whole-body symptoms. Allergic Rhinitis can cause itchy, watery eyes with throat irritation from drainage. Tonsillitis, Strep Throat, and Glandular Fever mainly affect the throat; eye redness may be a separate surface problem. Acid Reflux can irritate the throat but does not usually explain a new red eye.

The pattern matters: fever, cough, nasal symptoms, swollen glands, eye discharge, itching, and exposure to illness help a clinician narrow the possibilities. A sore throat with red eye does not by itself identify the cause.

Rest, drink fluids, and use simple measures that soothe the throat, such as warm drinks if comfortable. Wash hands, avoid sharing towels, and stay home from close contact while respiratory symptoms are active. Do not rub the eyes or share eye products. Remove contact lenses if the eye is red. A clinician can advise whether testing or prescription treatment is appropriate; antibiotics do not treat viral illness.

Seek prompt medical advice for trouble breathing or swallowing, drooling, dehydration, severe one-sided throat pain, a muffled voice, or rapidly increasing neck swelling. Urgent eye assessment is needed for eye pain, light sensitivity, blurred vision, injury, or a painful red eye in a contact-lens wearer. Arrange review when symptoms are worsening, persistent, or unusually severe.

Ask whether the pattern fits a respiratory infection or allergy, whether a throat or viral test is useful, how to protect others, and which eye or throat symptoms should trigger urgent review.
