What should you know about red eye ophthalmology?

Redness can come from the conjunctiva, the clear front surface of the eye, or inflammation within the eye. Allergic Conjunctivitis often brings itching and watering, while Conjunctivitis may bring discharge and spread between eyes. Those patterns do not by themselves confirm the cause. An ophthalmologist can check vision, the cornea, eye pressure, and internal structures using focused examination and light.

Tell the clinician about contact lenses, trauma, chemical splashes, recent procedures, immune conditions, and every eye product you use. These details can alter the urgency and the safe treatment.

Stop wearing contact lenses until a clinician says they are safe to resume. Do not rub the eye or apply steroid drops unless prescribed. Bring a list of medicines and note when redness began, whether it is in one eye or both, and whether discharge, watering, pain, or visual disturbance has changed. If symptoms are mild and improving, a routine appointment may be suitable; persistent or unexplained redness still deserves review.

Seek urgent eye care for reduced vision, severe or increasing pain, pronounced light sensitivity, a recent injury or chemical splash, a painful red eye with contact lenses, or symptoms that worsen quickly. Headache, vomiting, halos around lights, swelling around the eye, or difficulty moving the eye also require prompt assessment. Do not drive yourself if vision is affected.

Ask whether the cornea and eye pressure look normal, what is causing the redness, which drops are appropriate, when contact lenses can return, and what change should trigger emergency review.
