What should you know about red eye not itchy?

Lack of itching makes an allergy pattern less obvious, but it does not identify one diagnosis. Dry air, smoke, dust, screen strain or a small surface blood vessel can make the white of the eye look red. A red patch can look dramatic while causing little discomfort. In contrast, pain, light sensitivity, a foreign-body sensation or vision change can indicate a problem needing examination. Do not rub the eye. Take breaks from screens, avoid smoke and dusty rooms, and use a cool compress for comfort. Lubricating drops may help dryness when a pharmacist or clinician considers them suitable. Pause contact lenses and eye makeup until the redness has resolved. Avoid using redness-relief drops repeatedly without advice, because they may hide ongoing irritation.

Arrange urgent assessment for significant pain, reduced or blurred vision, marked light sensitivity, injury, chemical exposure, a swollen eyelid, or redness in a contact-lens wearer. Seek routine medical advice if the redness persists, recurs, develops discharge, or has no clear trigger. A clinician can inspect the surface of the eye and check vision.

Tell your doctor when the redness began, whether it is one or both eyes, and whether there is discharge, watering, pain, light sensitivity or vision change. Ask whether dryness, infection, a surface blood vessel or another cause fits the examination and what would require follow-up.
