What should you know about red eye and covid?

When red eye appears with fever, cough, sore throat, tiredness, or a known exposure, it may occur as part of a wider viral illness, but the eye appearance cannot confirm COVID-19. Viral conjunctivitis may cause watering, irritation, and redness, sometimes beginning in one eye and affecting the other. Itching is more suggestive of allergy. Bacterial discharge, contact-lens irritation, and dry air remain possible explanations.

Follow current local infection-control advice if you have respiratory symptoms or a known exposure. Wash hands, avoid touching the eyes, do not share towels, and clean frequently handled surfaces. Use a cool compress or suitable lubricating drops for comfort, and stop contact lenses while the eye is irritated. Avoid antibiotic or steroid eye drops unless prescribed after assessment.

Seek urgent eye care for pain, reduced vision, strong light sensitivity, marked swelling, injury, or a painful red eye in a contact-lens wearer. Get emergency help for sudden vision loss, severe headache with nausea, confusion, or difficulty breathing. Arrange review if redness worsens, discharge becomes heavy, or symptoms persist after the wider illness improves.

Ask whether the pattern fits viral conjunctivitis or another cause, whether COVID-19 assessment is appropriate, which drops are safe, and when contact lenses can be restarted.
