What should you know about red cyst on face?

A cyst is a closed sac beneath the skin that can become swollen and tender when its contents irritate nearby tissue. Redness may also come from an acne lesion, an ingrown hair, a bite, or repeated touching. A lump near the nose, eye, or mouth deserves particular care because swelling can affect nearby structures. Facial flushing is different: it is broad or intermittent redness rather than a defined lump, and rosacea can be one explanation.

Clean the area gently and use a warm, damp compress for short periods if it feels comfortable. Keep hands off, avoid needles and home drainage, and pause abrasive scrubs. A clinician can decide whether observation, prescription treatment, drainage, or removal is appropriate; the choice depends on depth, inflammation, location, and whether the lump returns. Do not apply steroid or antibiotic cream without advice, particularly on facial skin.

Seek prompt care if the lump rapidly enlarges, becomes very painful or hot, drains pus, or is accompanied by fever. Urgent assessment is appropriate for swelling around the eye, vision changes, severe headache, or difficulty breathing. Make a routine appointment when a lump persists, repeatedly returns, scars, bleeds, or does not behave like a short-lived spot. A photograph can help show how its size and colour have changed.
