What should you know about red cat-eye contact lenses?

Cat-eye contacts are decorative lenses, and a poor fit can rub the cornea or reduce comfortable tear flow. Wearing lenses for too long, sleeping in them, using contaminated solution, or sharing them can increase irritation and infection risk. Red Eye may involve watering, burning, gritty discomfort, discharge, or light sensitivity.

Allergic Conjunctivitis often causes itching and watering, while Conjunctivitis may cause discharge and can spread between people. A red eye in a contact-lens wearer deserves more caution because a corneal infection can threaten vision.

Wash your hands, remove the lenses, and do not put them back in while the eye is red or uncomfortable. Do not rinse lenses with tap water, share them, or use saliva to wet them. Keep the lens case and packaging available for the clinician, but do not reuse a disposable lens. Arrange prompt assessment if redness continues, particularly when there is pain, discharge, light sensitivity, or blurred vision.

Seek urgent eye care for eye pain, light sensitivity, blurred or reduced vision, a white spot on the cornea, marked swelling, or symptoms that worsen after removing the lens. A chemical splash or eye injury needs immediate help.
