Red Bumpy Nappy Rash: What Parents Should Know

Irritant nappy dermatitis often affects skin exposed to urine, stools, rubbing, or prolonged dampness. A yeast-related rash may be bright red, involve the skin folds, and have small bumps around the main area. The pattern can change when a child has diarrhoea, takes antibiotics, or uses a new wipe, nappy, soap, or cream. Soreness, broken skin, crusting, or discharge suggests that the area needs closer review.

Change nappies promptly and rinse or cleanse gently with lukewarm water. Pat rather than rub, allow brief nappy-free time, and use a plain protective barrier recommended for the child. Avoid fragranced wipes, talc, scrubbing, and multiple new products at once. Do not apply steroid or antifungal medicine unless a clinician or pharmacist has advised it for this child and area. Keep a note of foods, medicines, products, and bowel changes that preceded the flare.

Contact a clinician if the rash is painful, spreading, cracked, bleeding, blistered, crusted, associated with fever, or not improving with gentle care. Seek prompt help if the child seems unusually sleepy, is feeding poorly, or has signs of a wider illness. A baby with a severe or rapidly worsening rash should be assessed without delay.

Ask whether the folds are involved, whether yeast is suspected, which barrier product is suitable, and how long to try it. Tell the clinician about recent antibiotics, diarrhoea, new nappies, wipes, soaps, and creams.
