Red bumps after shaving the pubic area

Pubic hair is often coarse and the skin is exposed to close shaving, sweat, moisture, and friction. A cut hair can curve into nearby skin and create an itchy or tender ingrown hair. Irritated follicles may produce clusters of red bumps, while folliculitis can include small pustules. A reaction to shaving gel, fragrance, detergent, or lubricant can look similar. Not every bump in this area is caused by shaving, so a persistent or unusual rash deserves an examination.

Avoid assuming a sexually transmitted infection or dismissing one from appearance alone. Painful blisters, ulcers, discharge, or a new exposure should be discussed confidentially with a clinician.

Stop shaving and waxing until the skin settles. Wash gently with lukewarm water, pat dry, and wear loose breathable underwear. A cool compress can ease irritation. Do not squeeze, lance, scratch, or use strong acids, fragranced products, or household antiseptics on genital skin. Once healed, use clean equipment, shaving gel, light strokes in the direction of hair growth, and fewer passes.

For repeated episodes, a clinician can assess Folliculitis, Keratosis Pilaris, Razor Bumps, or Ingrown Hairs. Laser Hair Removal may be an option for some people who repeatedly develop shaving-related bumps, following a skin and hair assessment.

Arrange care for worsening pain, warmth, swelling, pus, crusting, spreading redness, recurrent lesions, or no improvement after stopping hair removal. Seek prompt attention for fever, feeling unwell, painful urination, genital sores, or unusual discharge. Urgent help is needed for rapidly increasing swelling or severe pain.

Ask whether the lesions are ingrown hairs, folliculitis, contact irritation, or another condition; whether testing is needed; what product is safe for external skin; and how to prevent recurrence.
