Red Bumps on the Face That Are Spreading

A gradual increase after a new cosmetic, cleanser, sunscreen, or hair product can indicate irritation or allergy. Bumps around hairs may reflect follicle inflammation. Warmth, tenderness, crusting, or drainage raises concern for infection and deserves assessment. Rosacea commonly presents with facial redness and bumps, particularly when flares recur with heat or other personal triggers. Spreading alone does not identify the cause; the speed and associated symptoms are more useful clues.

Stop any product introduced shortly before the change and keep a list of everything touching the face, including makeup and hair products. Wash gently, avoid exfoliation and shaving over the area, and do not pick. Use a clean pillowcase and avoid sharing towels or cosmetics. Take a clear photograph in natural light and note when the spread began. A clinician can decide whether you need a topical treatment, testing for contact allergy, or another evaluation.

Seek same-day medical advice when spreading redness is painful, hot, swollen, draining, or accompanied by fever. Get urgent help for swelling around the eyes, vision changes, severe headache, breathing difficulty, or swelling of the lips or tongue. Even without these warning signs, book an appointment if the rash continues to expand, recurs, or affects the eyes.
