What should you know about a red bump on the eyelid?

A tender bump near the lashes can be a stye, while a firmer lump deeper in the lid may be a blocked oil gland. The eyelid can become swollen and sore, and the eye may water. Conjunctivitis affects the eye surface and may cause widespread redness or discharge; Allergic Conjunctivitis commonly brings itching and watering rather than a single tender lump.

The appearance alone cannot confirm the cause. Repeated bumps may be associated with eyelid inflammation or skin conditions, so recurrence is worth discussing with an eye-care professional.

Apply a clean warm compress to the closed eyelid for several minutes, repeating this through the day if comfortable. Keep the lid clean, wash hands before touching it, and avoid squeezing or puncturing the bump. Pause eye makeup and contact lenses until irritation has settled. Do not use another person’s drops or old prescription medicine. Seek review if the lump is persistent, repeatedly returns, or affects vision.

Get urgent medical help if swelling spreads around the eye, the eye becomes very painful, vision changes, you develop fever, moving the eye hurts, or the eye is pushed forward. A chemical injury or penetrating injury requires immediate care.
