What should you know about Red Bull and cluster headache?

Cluster headache is a neurological disorder that causes severe pain, often around one eye or on one side of the head. Attacks can come with a watery or red eye, a blocked or runny nostril, facial sweating, or marked restlessness. The timing and repeated pattern matter more than the name of a drink.

Caffeine can affect alertness, sleep, hydration habits, and the way some people experience headaches. A caffeinated energy drink may coincide with an attack, while suddenly stopping regular caffeine can also trigger headache in some people. A drink does not prove that the symptom is cluster headache. A clinician will consider migraine, sinus-related pain, eye problems, and other causes.

Record when each attack starts, which side hurts, how long it lasts, eye or nose changes, sleep disruption, and what you drank beforehand. Avoid using energy drinks as a treatment experiment, especially late in the day. Keep a steady sleep routine and drink fluids normally. Arrange a GP Consultation if attacks repeat, wake you from sleep, or are becoming harder to manage. A doctor can assess the pattern and discuss treatments designed for acute attacks and prevention.

Seek urgent medical help for a sudden, severe headache unlike previous headaches, new weakness or numbness, confusion, fainting, a seizure, fever with a stiff neck, loss of vision, or a painful red eye. Also seek prompt assessment if a new headache follows a head injury or occurs during pregnancy or soon after delivery.

Ask whether the attack timing and eye or nose symptoms fit cluster headache, whether caffeine or sleep changes may be contributing, and which warning signs should change your plan.
