Red boils on the scalp: what to know

A boil is a painful, red lump that forms when infection develops around a hair follicle. It may feel warm, become swollen, and later collect pus. Several nearby boils can join into a larger infected area. A scalp lump can have other causes too, so its appearance alone cannot confirm the diagnosis.

Avoid squeezing or piercing it. Pressure can push infection deeper, irritate the scalp, and spread bacteria to nearby skin. Shared combs, hats, towels, or pillowcases can also transfer infection, so keep personal items separate until the area settles.

Wash the area gently, pat it dry, and use a clean warm, moist compress for short periods to ease tenderness. Do not pick at the crust or shave over the lump. Wash your hands after touching the scalp and change pillowcases and towels regularly.

A clinician may recommend antibiotics for a skin infection when surrounding redness, drainage, or other findings suggest they are needed. A larger collection of pus may require abscess drainage by a trained professional; do not attempt this at home.

Arrange prompt medical assessment if redness is spreading, pain is worsening, several boils appear, or pus continues to drain. Seek urgent help for fever, chills, marked swelling, confusion, or feeling severely unwell. Extra caution is needed if you have diabetes, reduced immunity, or take medicines that affect healing.
