What should you know about red blurry eye?

Redness can follow dryness, irritation, allergy, or inflammation on the eye surface. Conjunctivitis may blur vision temporarily through watering or discharge, and Allergic Conjunctivitis can cause itching and fluctuating blur. Blurring that remains after blinking or cleaning discharge is more concerning. A red eye is a symptom, not a diagnosis, and the degree and speed of visual change help guide assessment.

Do not drive if your vision is blurred. Remove contact lenses, avoid rubbing the eye, and do not use leftover antibiotic, steroid, or someone else’s drops. Wash your hands and keep eye products and towels separate. If a small amount of discharge is present, gently clean the lids with clean water. Seek emergency care for sudden or major vision loss, severe eye pain, intense light sensitivity, a cloudy-looking cornea, injury, chemical splash, or nausea with headache.
