What should you know about red blotchy rash?

Note whether the rash is itchy, painful, scaly, raised, warm, blistered, or spreading. A rash after a new soap, cosmetic, plant, or fabric can fit Contact Dermatitis. Itching in folds may fit Intertrigo, while a ring-shaped scaly patch can occur with Ringworm. Some rashes follow sweating and blocked sweat ducts, as in Heat Rash. Psoriasis and Atopic Dermatitis can produce recurring inflamed, dry areas. A rash that begins after a new medicine needs prompt clinical review because Drug Rash can range from mild to serious.

Stop any newly introduced fragranced product and rinse the area gently with lukewarm water. Keep the skin cool, dry, and protected from rubbing; choose loose clothing and avoid scratching. Take clear photographs and record when the rash began, where it started, recent products, medicines, foods, travel, heat exposure, and contact with anyone who is itchy. Do not apply leftover steroid, antibiotic, or antifungal cream until a clinician has considered the pattern, since the wrong product can mask or irritate some rashes.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, blistering, skin peeling, severe pain, purple or bruise-like spots, or involvement of the eyes or mouth. Arrange prompt assessment if fever or marked unwellness accompanies the rash, if it is rapidly spreading, or if it follows a new medicine. A persistent, recurrent, or worsening rash also deserves an examination so treatment matches the cause.
