Red blotchy bumps on arms: what to look for

Small, rough, evenly spaced bumps on the outer upper arms often fit keratosis pilaris, sometimes called chicken skin. Bumps centered on hairs, especially after shaving, sweating, or friction, can fit folliculitis. Pus, crusting, tenderness, or rapid change makes folliculitis more concerning than a stable rough texture. A clinician can also check whether a product, fabric, or other irritant is contributing.

Use a mild cleanser and apply a plain moisturiser after bathing. Avoid picking, harsh scrubs, rough loofahs, and close shaving over inflamed bumps. If the skin is rough rather than sore, a product containing a gentle exfoliating ingredient may help gradually, but stop if it stings or worsens redness. Do not squeeze pus-filled bumps or share towels and razors.

Seek care promptly if bumps become rapidly more painful, hot, swollen, pus-filled, or associated with fever, or if redness spreads. Make an appointment when the eruption persists despite gentle care, leaves marks, repeatedly returns, or affects a large area. Sudden facial swelling or breathing difficulty needs emergency help.

Ask whether the bumps are follicle-related or consistent with keratosis pilaris, which ingredients suit your skin, and whether shaving or hair-removal habits should change. Mention any tenderness, drainage, or recent product changes.
